About me
I'm a visual artist and writer interested in language, sub-cultures and identity.
Themes in my practice include simple and powerful messages that explore the use and impact of language, and subverting familiar themes to reveal sub-cultural identity. Much of my work is text based, however I also make abstract prints and digital images exploring the resonance of colour. This side of my practice is the antithesis of my issue based work.
In 2010 I was awarded The Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary from Shape London and was artist in residence at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead during March - June 2011. During the rest of 2011 I will be pursuing new work directions that came out of this time, as well as taking on new commissions.
I’m an experienced workshop leader and have worked on community art based projects since 2000. I can deliver large scale public art in a variety of mediums in collaboration with specialist manufacturers to suit particular project ideas, as well as independent production in photography, traditional printmaking, graphics, collage and digital / mixed media.
Some of my work is about disability experience, often made in collaboration with disabled people. Why disabled people? From early childhood I’ve had a series of spectacular pratfalls, many of which resulted in me dislocating knees. In the middle of my Fine Art degree this caused some major problems that plunged me into a world of walking sticks, wheelchairs and NHS administration.
I work with art organisations, local authorities and creative agencies in the south east region, as well as pursuing individual art and writing projects. I also work as a creative advisor on a range of art based projects. This can take the form of a creative consultation process that combines my experience as a creative planner with specialist knowledge of disability awareness and inclusion.
